Re: Blueprint Requested Event Topic : Examples

we have XaaS forrn which we are converting to Custom form , XaaS have a logic which determines the VRM location and network for the VM before it created a vRA managed entity, now since we are converting XaaS to Custom form in composite Blueprint, we want to run the similar logic before the managed machine is created in vRA so it goes to correct location. for which i found this event suitable but i am not able to fix a working example

Autoprotect may be something to help reverting to a previous state, but it doesn't replace backups.

Anway, to get an overview of what's damaged, and what can be done, please download dsfok.zip from http://faq.sanbarrow.com/index.php?action=artikel&cat=47&id=111&artlang=en, extract the executables, run the below command in the VM's folder, then compress/zip all the "xxx-....bin" files and attach the .zip archive to a reply post.

for %i in (*.vmdk) do @dsfo.exe "%i" 0 2686976 "xxx-%~ni.bin"

The command will extract only metadata (i.e. no user data) from the .vmdk files.

When I first checked the VM's settings in the UI, it was pointing the disk at coded-debian-0001.vmdk rather than the main vmdk file. ...

VMs with snapshots always point to the latest snapshot .vmdk file, and never to the base disk. Did you backup the VM's files before, or after you modified the .vmx file, i.e. do you have a backup of the main .vmdk file before you changed anything?

Migrating esxi host from Windows vCenter to VCSA

$

According to the VMware Knowledge Base article it should be a matter of removing the server from the inventory from the Windows vCenter server and adding it to the new VCSA. However, after removing the host from the first vCenter when we import the esxi host on the new VCSA, the final step says it will shut down all running vms on the host and put it into maintenance mode.

We are not using storage DRS or distributed switches and we have configured the DRS/HA settings to be the same on both vCenter servers. DRS is running in manual mode. The Windows vCenter server is running 6.7 build 11727065 and the VCSA is running 6.7 build 15129973. The VCSA is running in evaluation mode because we are trying to move the esxi hosts before we switch licenses. We did not use the migrate function when moving to the VCSA because we need to give the VCSA a different IP Address and host name.

Any ideas of what we can do to move the esxi hosts while running with active vms would be appreciated. Otherwise we will need to shut down the vms and put the hosts in maintenance mode.

Thanks.

vpxd shows the current version of vcenter that I am running. But the VAMI shows an older version. I did a recursive grep and found only 2 files showing the older version

/etc/issue and /etc/applmgmt/appliance/update.conf.

vpxd -v shows the newer version 10964411

VAMI shows older version 7119157

ESX Adding to Active Directory

Hi Friends,

I would like to add the ESX host in Windows Active Directory, please share the inputs and powercli scripts.

I have followed the cmd below. I'm able to add ESX host in Active Directory, unable to login with ESX using AD Credentials (after adding domain & No rebooted), is there any way to add the same AD Group using VC Admin permission group has been added to the ESX.

Get-VMHostAuthentication-VMHost<VMHost> | Set-VMHostAuthentication-JoinDomain-Domain<Domain> -User<Username> -Password<Password>

Thanks !!!!!

What you may try is to add the host to the datacenter level in the inventory, i.e. not directly to a cluster, and move the host to the cluster in a second step.

How best to upgrade my storage on ESXi 6.5

$

I've been running ESXi 6.5 for some time on an old Dell T110 server. It hosts a Centos 7 distro, running one main application - Plex Media Server.

It all runs on one 1TB WD Red disk, and the disk is getting nearly full. Before I run out of space as I add more media, I want to increase the storage capacity.

I have a 120GB SSD, and a 4TB WD Red hard disk. I'd welcome advice as to how best to upgrade the storage.

I can see several options of increasing complexity. In all cases I would back up the media data first, to another disk on another machine (I'm doing that as I write).

1. Just add the 4GB disk, and move the data onto it, then configure the Plex Media Server to use that instead of the present location and leave the 1TB disk in place.

2. Start over with a completely new install of ESXi on the 4GB disk, create a VM and install Centos 7 or 8, then reinstall Plex Media Server and copy the media data back onto it.

3. Fit both the SSD and 4TB disk into the server, install ESXi and Centos 7 or 8 then Plex Media server on the SSD, and copy the media data back onto the 4TB disk.

4. Somehow move ESXi and the VM onto the SSD from the 1TB disk, remove the 1TB disk, add the 4TB disk, then move the media data back onto the 4TB disk.

I've no real idea how to do 4 - can it be done without completely starting from scratch? If so, how?

What would you advise for most secure long term performance?

Start Menu Stops Working on Linked Clones

Hello All,

Have an issue with the start button not working at all after user logs back in.  Not exactly sure at what point it stops working but most users do not restart their computers so i doubt that is the reason.  I found that the fix for me is to remove the persistent disk and then have them re-login.  The start button doens't work but teh search (mignifying glass) does.  IT may last a user for a while but might eventually happen again.  I've read the other posts about the start menu issue but UEM was involved and i am not using UEM or APPVOL.  Any thoughts or comments are welcome.  thanks guys!

Constant pestering for Mac Keychain password

Anyone know how to stop VMware Horizon Client v 5.3.0 on the Mac to stop asking for the login keychain's password. It has no need for the access but at random times it'll get stuck in a loop where canceling the request pops up a new model dialog asking for the password.

vCenter Upgrade 6.5 w External PSC to 6.7

Hi Folks, Good day!

I have done few vC upgrades in the past. But kind of confused dealing with 6.7 which supports embedded PSC.

Currently, I have a vC 6.0 with 2 external PSC attached. While upgrade to 6.7 which will convert PSC to embedded, we will start upgrade with PSC or directly on vC and it will pull data from associate PSC.

Usual upgrade we do, we start with PSC and then vC itself. Not sure if will change dealing with 6.7.

Please help me to understand.

Thanks,

Hari.

Re: Exposing Configuration in vRO

I don't understand the question.

Configuration elements can be updated in many ways (via REST API, via scripting code, via content import) but all of them require some sort of access to vRO, at least the user should have proper credentials to login and perform the update.

Could you provide more details on your use case? How do you envision your team to update something they don't have access to?

Yes, set the execution policy, by a command in for example a profile for All Usersa

Set-ExecutionPolicy-ExecutionPolicy AllSigned

Or do it in a GPO.

I'm confused now, what exactly do you want?
This thread started with an alarm for low free space on datastore, which yoiu said didn't work due to a bug.

Which alarm are you referring to?

Looks like vCheck can't resolve the name of the VCSA?

Is DNS resolution working from the station where you launch the script?

After adding ESX server to the Domain. Add the Group to Custom created AD Group(contains Admin Previlages in Vcenter Same group has been added to the ESX host) after Sucessfully Completed not able to Login the ESX Host Gui /Shell.

For Ex: I have added Esx host in domain like : emea.xxx.xxxx

And i have changed to the  "ESX Admins" to Custom Group has owning the Permissions on the same on Vcenter. (Change               the Config.HostAgent.plugins.hostsvc.esxAdminsGroup setting to match the Administrator group that you want to use in the Active Directory.)

Error Screens:

While trying to Login the ESX : userid@domain.com

Maybe I mis-read, but is sounds like you have only one VM in the ESXi server, so kinda wondering why you don't just run that on the bare metal.  But to answer your question, I'd probably do a variation of option 1:

1. Just add the 4GB disk, and move the data onto it, then configure the Plex Media Server to use that instead of the present location and leave the 1TB disk in place.

You may not need to tell Plex anything -- install the 4TB disk along with the 1TB, and create a data store on it.  Shutdown the Plex server and move the VMDK to the new datastore.  Without vMotion, the fastest way to do that may be to use the VMWare converter, I'm not certain.  I would not deploy the SSD at all, except maybe for a scratch disk, because of the increased failure rate in high-write environments..

Windows Server 2016 Requirements and ESXI 6.5.0

Hello,

Please move if in wrong area.

I have 5 Dell R730’ Servers each with VMWARE ESXI, Version 1.8.0, Build 4516221, ESXI Version 6.5.0, ESXI Build Version 4887370 running Windows Server 2012 r2 VM’s.

I want to delete all the Server 2012 R2s and install Windows Server 2016, researching the requirements for Windows Server 2016 I see that the following is recommended; 64-bit CPU with second-level address translation (SLAT), VM Monitor Mode extensions, 4GB RAM, Virtualization support-enabled BIOS or UEFI, Data Execution Prevention (DEP) support-enabled BIOS or UEFI, Network access (optional for VM use; required if VMs must communicate with the network/internet).

Where can I lookup if my current 6.5.0 will support the Server 2016 requirements.

Thank you

May have found a work around. See if it lasts. I unlocked the key chain in the KeyChain app and the requests from Horizon app changed to requests to export private certificate keys out. Denied those but it still repeats the cycle requesting a private key copy from all my personal certs every few minutes.

Thank you Andre. Certainly we will have close look on provisioning or deleting the VM's during the Upgrade. How about actual connectivity during the upgrade, i.e Will existing full cloned VM's , can be accessible through connection broker during the  Vcenter upgrade.
